Plymouth is the major shopping centre for a large area of Devon and Cornwall; the central area is pedestrianised. Many city stores (including the main bookshops) offer discounts to University students.

While there are good catering facilities on campus, the city offers many alternative places to eat both in the central shopping area of the city as well as in the historic Barbican area surrounding Plymouth's ancient harbour.

The townscape is varied with buildings ranging in date from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century, the Tudor Barbican area, the elegant Georgian terraces of Stonehouse and the Victorian terraces and villas of the Hoe and Stoke Village. As well as Plymouth's Royal Dockyard which remains one of the city's most striking physical landmarks.

The University itself offers a range of sports, cultural, social and recreational facilities for students. In addition, the City of Plymouth has a wide variety of nightlife, including pubs, clubs, theatres and cinemas.
