Here are
some comments from former students of the PgDip/MA Publishing course: |

Kate
Macefield
'Of the four modules it's hard to compare them as they are all really
relevant but I think the 506 for me
was very realistic. Although I wish I could do it again with what
I know now, I'd probably have done it in a week! 508
was very good too, I don't know if I mentioned it but I've moved from
editorial into production now so I have to use all those skills all
the time, they're invaluable'.
Kate's
first job was for Adrenalin magazine, the company she spent her
work placement with while on the course.

Lewis
Birchon
'I'd say that the best thing to do on the course is practical work.
Basically if the uni can develop a curriculum that gives the students
as much viable experience as possible through a hands on, doing while
you're learning, approach then it makes life a lot easier when trying
to get a job'.
Lewis
now works for David & Charles as an editor.

Sean
Burns
'The course did give me some direction - but mostly (and more importantly)
gave me industry knowledge/awareness. The overview it gives you of
all the publishing processes and mediums is invaluable. After
leaving the course I found my feet in the news industry 'specifically
in redesigns (both for web and print) for me, having that overview
of the complete publishing process was essential' it is impossible
to design sites and portals without understanding the workflows,
people, technology that goes into producing and broadcasting'.
Since
graduation in 1996, Sean has had three jobs in publishing: Infographist
Wall Street Journal, Internet Art Director eCounties, Internet Art
Director Hollinger Telegraph.

Judith
Wise
'I enjoyed it enormously. There were about 30 students in my year
from all around the world, some of whom already had publishing experience,
which made for a great diverse group to work on projects with. When
I started looking for my first job I found most people viewed the
course as equivalent to a year's experience. It made employers aware
you were committed to publishing, over those graduates coming straight
from university'.
Judith
now works as Healthcare marketing manager for a small publishing
company.

Anke
Ueberberg
'The PgDip part of the course was certainly very useful for me- in
particular, the Quark skills, design analysis, working on our own
publication project and the visits to publishers and printers. I think
the single most important thing that helped me get an extended (paid)
work placement at AA publishing, and later my first job, was the Quark
skills I had gained on the course'.Anke
is now editorial manager for the Health Sciences department at Hodder
Educational.
