Macmillan
One of the UKs largest privately owned publishing house and is over 150 years old. They publish an extensive range of titles in many genres including:

Fiction and non-fiction
Childrens
Academic
Reference
ELT (English Language Teaching)
Nature magazine and associated journals

Macmillan give lectures on campus and at their London office. The topics covered this year included costing, digital books, production and warehousing.

PgDip/MA Publishing course

Intellect Books
The expanding academic publishers Intellect is an independent company based in Bristol. They publish books, journals and magazines of scholarly and general interest. The titles cover topics such as digital creative media, education and gender study.

Chairman Masoud Yazdani gives visiting lectures on the development of Intellect, starting a publishing business and working in a small publishing house. The company has very close links with the university and they offer students several opportunities to carry out work experience at their offices.

Rooks Books
Rooks books make handmade bindings and sculptured objects. They are well known for their leather bindings and increasingly for their work on ornate and unusual commissions.

Owner Gavin Rookledge designs and makes the commissioned pieces and spends several days at the university demonstrating how to make a hand-bound book.

Butler & Tanner
F
ounded in 1850 as an integrated repro house and printers. Since then it has developed a reputation as one of the print industries leading companies. They produce nearly 20 million books per year for some of the worlds leading publishers, and for the past five years have been voted 'UK Book printer of the year'.

During a day visit you will be given an introduction to the work they do and a tour of the premises.

David & Charles
A
re a Devonshire based publishers who pride themselves on their range of illustrated books. They established themselves during the 1960s and became famous for their classic books on railways and canals of the UK. Today they produce a wide variety of colour illustrated books on leisure activities for an illustrated market.

David & Charles offer placement opportunities, they also employ many graduates from the course.
